Warning: I used to drill through every wall for sensor wires, now I almost never do

For my first five years, I'd grab the hammer drill and a 3/8 inch bit for every door and window sensor run. It was messy, took forever, and customers hated the dust. After a job in a 1920s brick house in St. Louis where the owner nearly had a fit, I switched to trying wireless sensors first. I only drill now if the signal is weak or the battery change schedule is a deal-breaker for the client. When do you guys decide to go wired versus wireless on a retrofit?

Weird interference is the worst.

The brick house story hits home. Wireless sensors have gotten way better, but skipping a signal check is asking for trouble. You should always test the signal strength at each spot before you even quote the job. I learned that the hard way after a few call backs to places with weird interference.
