Unpopular opinion: drilling through studs for wire runs is overrated
I overheard a guy at a supply house say he never uses flexible drill bits for fishing wire in finished walls. He just uses magnets and pulls everything along baseboards instead. That got me thinking - are we all wasting time with drills and bits when there's an easier way? I've got a job coming up in a 1980s house with plaster walls, and I'm torn. Has anyone else tried the magnet method for a whole house setup?

Magnet method works great till you realize your uncle @sage_perry is just stringing you along with that advice. Plaster walls don't forgive mistakes either.

...and thats exactly how i ended up with my drill bit stuck in a stud and had to call my dad to come save me, so yeah, i feel like that supply house guy is onto something if he can actually pull it off without making a mess. i tried the magnet method once on a smaller job and spent more time untangling the wire from my belt loops than actually fishing it, so maybe i just need better magnets or less clumsy fingers. plaster walls from the 80s sound like a nightmare though, those things crumble if you look at them wrong, so the magnet route might save you some dust and frustration if you can keep it straight.
