That old panel battery backup finally quit on a service call in Peoria

I was swapping out a keypad for a customer last Tuesday, and the whole system just went dark when I pulled the transformer. Turns out the backup battery in their panel was from 2016, and it held zero charge, which I only found out because I didn't bring my jumper pack that day. Had to drive 40 minutes back to the shop for a spare, then another 40 out, and the homeowner was watching me the whole time like I was robbing the place. What do you guys do on service calls when the backup is dead and you can't test the panel without power, do you carry a portable unit or just guess?
