My old boss made me buy a $400 cable toner ten years ago and I still use it every month.

I thought it was a crazy price for a simple tool when I was starting out. But it has saved me hours of tracing wires in walls and ceilings on retrofit jobs. I just used it last week to find a cut line in a 90s house. What's the one tool you bought that seemed too expensive but paid for itself?

Still seems like a lot for a wire finder.

That's the thing with good tools, they feel like a rip-off until you use them for the tenth time. It's like paying for good boots or a solid drill. The upfront cost stings, but you stop thinking about it after it saves your butt over and over. You end up trusting the tool more than your own guesswork.

$80 for a wire finder is ridiculous honestly. I bought a cheap one for $20 on Amazon and it works fine for finding wires behind drywall. Unless you're doing this every single day you're basically paying for a brand name.
