Had a talk with a retired locksmith that shook my install habits

I was swapping out an old DSC panel for a new Honeywell last Tuesday and the homeowner's dad, who used to keypin locks for 30 years, watched me fish a wire through a brick wall and said 'son, you're fighting the studs, not the concrete.' He was right, I was drilling from the wrong side and wasting 20 minutes. How often do you step back and let someone outside the trade point out your blind spots?

Man that retired locksmith line hit different. Its wild how easy it is to get tunnel vision after doing the same moves for years. My buddy whos a carpenter saved me from drilling through a joist once when I was dead set on a bad route. The older guys who actually take time to watch and speak up are rare. Most people just let you struggle or offer half baked advice from the couch. Respect to that dad for keeping it real and saving you the headache.

Learned that one the hard way with a coax cable a few years back.
