Appreciation post: My $300 label maker saved a whole house rewire from being a mess

I was doing a full system upgrade on a big old house, pulling all new wire for like 30 zones. Halfway through, I realized I was mixing up the runs for the back patio and the upstairs hall because my tape labels kept falling off. I ran out and bought a Brady label maker that prints those tough plastic sleeves. It cost about $300 with the tape, but I tagged every single wire end clearly. When I came back to program the panel two days later, I just followed the labels and it took maybe an hour instead of half a day tracing wires. What's your go-to for keeping big jobs straight?

Tape labels are a disaster waiting to happen, especially with dust or moisture. I would never start a job that size without a proper label maker from day one. The time you lose fixing a mix-up eats up any money you saved on cheap supplies. A Brady or a P-touch is just basic job insurance for any serious wiring work.

You mentioned pulling new wire for about 30 zones. That's a huge job. Did you plan on using the tape labels from the start, or was the label maker a total panic buy when things started going sideways?
