Why does everyone say you need a torque wrench for lug nuts? I just snug them with a 4-way and never had a wheel fall off
A young A&P at our hangar in Wichita asked me last week why I don't use a torque wrench on the lug nuts when I pull a wheel, and I told him I've done it by feel with a 4-way for 20 years on everything from 172s to King Airs without a single issue. He pulled out the manual and showed me the spec right there, 90 inch-pounds, and I kind of brushed it off at first. But then I got to thinking about how I've never actually checked one after snugging it by hand, and that bugged me a little. So I grabbed our shop's torque wrench the next day and checked 12 lugs I'd just done, and 4 of them were off by more than 15 percent. Has anyone else caught themselves doing this and switched over, or am I the only one who got lazy about it?
