My A&P instructor bet me $20 that a 747 wing flexes more than 20 feet and I lost
I was going through my old turbine textbooks last week and found a note I wrote in the margin about wing flex. My instructor back at the school in Wichita dropped a stat on us during a structures class: a fully loaded 747 wingtip can move up and down about 25 feet during turbulence. I argued with him for 10 minutes and lost $20 in front of the whole shop. Now I tell that same number to every new guy who walks through our hangar and they never believe me either. What's the one spec or number that still blows your mind after all this time?
Had the same thing happen to me with the 777 engine fan diameter. A guy swore it was under 10 feet and I had to pull up the specs on my phone right there in the break room to settle it. That number is 11 feet and change by the way, and he still owes me lunch.
