I used to think you could skip the full torque sequence on a Lycoming cylinder base nut

For years I'd just go to final torque in one pass, thinking the book was being too careful... until I saw a cracked flange on a 540 after a 500 hour inspection. What's the one shortcut you've seen cause the most trouble down the line?

Saw the same thing happen once. Learned to follow the book step by step after that.

Honestly, it reminds me of guys skipping the proper break-in on a fresh engine. They just want to get it in the air, so they take it easy for an hour and call it good. I watched a buddy burn through a quart every three hours because the rings never seated right. He had to tear it down again before 300 hours. That whole "run it hard" procedure exists for a real reason, you know? What's the rush if you're just going to pay for it later?

Sarah's totally right about the break-in, it's the same mindset. People skip steps because they don't see the immediate damage, but the bill always comes due later. That cracked flange is just the engine collecting its debt.
