Had a talk with a 30-year A&P that changed how I look at torque specs
I was swapping a nose gear tire on a Citation last week and he walked over and told me I was torquing the axle nut way too tight, like 50 ft-lbs over the book spec. He said he learned the hard way when a hub cracked on him back in the 90s and ever since he sticks to the manual no matter what the old timers say. Has anyone else had a veteran mechanic drop a piece of advice that made you rethink your whole approach to a job?

Yeah, but isn't there a point where experience should count for something though...?

Man, I've been thinking about this all day. @jordan653 experience definitely counts for something, but only if you're actually learning from it. I've seen too many people with 20 years of doing the same thing wrong just to call it experience. It's more about what you take away from the situations you've been through.
