Touring the old Bell Labs building in Murray Hill, NJ and seeing the actual transistor table
I tagged along on a campus tour in Murray Hill last month and the guide pointed out the room where the first transistor got built back in 1947. What got me was a little display showing how much compute that first point-contact device could do compared to a modern phone chip, and the gap is just silly big. Standing there made me think about how fast stuff is moving right now with AI models and how this spot is basically ground zero for all of it. Your mileage may vary on the tour, but it's free if you ever get the chance to go. Has anyone else been to an old research site like that and felt weirdly small standing in it?
