The 2008 demo that still feels futuristic to me

I dug up an old video from a tech conference in Chicago where they showed an AI that could draw a cat from a text prompt, and the output was basically a blob. Last week I typed the same kind of sentence into a free tool and got a photoreal image in under a minute. Has anyone else noticed how we went from barely working demos to this being totally normal?

I was reading a blog about old Midjourney versions the other day and it hit me how fast this all moved... like people were arguing about whether a weird smudge looked like a dog in 2021 and now we're past the uncanny valley. Kind of wild to think the tech got bored with cats and moved on to whole videos while we were still impressed by the blobs.
