Why does nobody talk about how bad abandoned asylums smell in the summer
Everyone posts these cool photos of peeling paint and rusty beds, but nobody warned me about the smell of rotting wood mixed with old mildew and animal droppings from a century of neglect, and after exploring three floors of an old mental hospital in Ohio last July I nearly passed out from the stench alone, has anyone else dealt with that or am I just unlucky?

Tack on that the smell is probably why those places actually got shut down in the first place, not just because of patient mistreatment or budget cuts.

94+ with humidity in that place? I stumbled through the old kitchen on the third floor in the Ridgewood asylum outside Cleveland last July and the mix of stale grease, rat piss, and that sweet rotting wood smell hit me like a wall. Did you get the full blast of the basement too or did you tap out before that? Because I swear there was something dead down there that had been cooking for weeks in the heat, and the smell stuck to my boots for three days after.
