That time I almost got stuck in an abandoned grain silo near Topeka

I was exploring this old grain silo complex outside Topeka last Saturday when the rusted ladder gave way about 15 feet up. I had to shimmy down a support beam and landed hard on a pile of old corn husks. My camera got scratched but I managed to snap a few shots of the decayed machinery before heading back. Has anyone else dealt with a sketchy ladder collapse or find a good way to check stability beforehand?

Start checking ladders by kicking the bottom rungs first and watching for dust or rust flakes... the stuff that looks solid on top is usually rotten underneath, just like how most things around us fall apart from the inside out before we notice.

That reminds me, my buddy had a kayak that looked fine on the outside until he took it out and the bottom just gave way in the middle of the lake. Turns out the foam core had rotted from years of sitting damp in his garage.
