Old school vs digital for documenting abandoned places

I used to carry a heavy DSLR and a notebook on every explore. About 6 months ago in an old factory outside Richmond, my bag strap broke and I dropped the camera down an elevator shaft. I just use my phone now and record voice notes instead of writing. The pics are good enough for Instagram and I don't lose anything anymore. Has anyone else switched to simpler gear after a disaster?

Had a buddy lose his entire phone in a flooded basement. He was taking a photo near a sump pump and his hand slipped. Splash. Gone. He spent weeks trying to dry it out in rice, never worked. Now he uses a cheap point and shoot that's waterproof and carries a tiny field notes book in a ziplock bag. Says he sleeps better not worrying about a thousand dollar phone drowning.

Did your buddy put the phone in uncooked rice or instant rice? I've heard that makes a difference, though honestly I think the whole rice trick is mostly a myth at this point. @jackson.sarah Anyway, the real move is having a cheap backup camera for risky situations. I keep an old Canon Powershot in my glove box for the same reason.

Been reading up on that rice myth too, multiple tech repair blogs say it doesn't really absorb moisture and can even push dust deeper into the phone. You ever try the silica gel packets method instead, or just stick with a backup camera now?
