Old sanitarium in New York taught me to check floors carefully first

Last month I visited a closed down sanitarium up near Hudson, New York. Place had been empty since 1999 according to the county records I found online. I walked right into a room that looked fine from the doorway but the floorboards were completely rotted through. Fell about 4 feet into the basement and twisted my ankle pretty bad. Had to limp out using a broken chair leg as a cane for almost an hour. Now I always bring a long stick to poke at the floor before I step anywhere inside. Anyone else have a close call with bad flooring in an old building?

Oh man, that is rough @linda_butler28 but I gotta say, your comment cracked me up. Seriously though, that fall sounds terrifying, I've had my own close calls with sketchy floors in old places and it's no joke. The worst was in a school I checked out where the whole second floor had this weird bounce to it, like walking on a trampoline. Took me forever to realize the supports underneath were basically dust. I'm glad you made it out okay even if your ankle paid the price, because that could have been so much worse if your head hit something on the way down.
