My arborist buddy said spray paint kills poison ivy roots, I tried it on a full overgrown lot

He told me to just hit the stumps with orange marking paint after cutting, said the solvent in the aerosol would rot the roots in 3 weeks. It actually worked, the ivy shriveled up and I cleared the whole lot behind the old textile mill in 2 weekends. Has anyone else used something weird like that for clearing around abandoned buildings?

Oh man that reminds me of this stuff my dad used to swear by for clearing out behind the old barn on our property - he'd mix diesel fuel and rock salt and pour it on the roots of really stubborn brush, and it'd just kill everything dead in a couple weeks tops. I always figured the spray paint trick was just urban legend but I guess the solvents in those cans are harsh enough to mess up the rooting system pretty good. Now I'm wondering if that'd work on the kudzu that's been trying to eat my cousin's shed down in Georgia.

Kudzu's a whole different beast man, my uncle tried the diesel trick on some in Alabama and it barely phased it. That stuff laughs at normal methods. The spray paint thing might work better because it's got those solvents that seep deep and dry out the vascular system. Have you tried just cutting it back and dumping straight bleach on the stumps?
