Everyone says to always go into abandoned places alone for the 'pure' experience, but I got stuck in a factory basement in Gary and now I bring a friend.

I was exploring the old Republic Steel plant last fall, trying to get a shot of this massive, rusted furnace. I went down a set of stairs that looked fine, but a piece of concrete gave way behind me and blocked my way back up. I was alone, my phone had no signal, and I was down there for almost two hours before I found another way out. It wasn't spooky ghosts that changed my mind, it was simple physics and bad concrete. Does anyone else have a hard rule about never exploring solo anymore?

Gary? You went into an abandoned building in Gary by yourself? That's the part that's actually crazy to me. The concrete thing is just bad luck, but choosing to walk around alone in that city is a whole different kind of risk. I'd be more worried about who else might be using that place than the structure falling down. You got lucky it was just a blocked stairway.

Yeah my buddy Mark tried that a few years back, went into an old factory there to take photos. He said the feeling of being watched was so strong he left after ten minutes. Later found out the place was a known spot for deals after dark. He still says the vibe was worse than any broken floor or rusty metal. Makes you wonder what you don't see in those places, right?

The meth lab I found in a Cleveland warehouse was way scarier than any bad floor.
