Watched my grandma's 1952 home movie reel get eaten by a projector in her basement in Fresno, and I need you all to hear this
My grandma passed in March and we found 6 metal film canisters labeled 1952 to 1957 in her basement off Belmont Ave, and I made the mistake of threading one into her old Bell and Howell projector without checking it first. The reel started fine for about 40 seconds, then I heard a tearing sound and watched about 15 minutes of her wedding footage get shredded and wrapped around the sprocket. Turns out the film had vinegar smell and warping from sitting in a damp basement for 60 years, and I should have sent it to a transfer place first. The other 5 reels are fine but I haven't touched them since. Has anyone dealt with vinegar syndrome on old 16mm film, and is there any way to save what got torn?
