Remember when you actually had to call a friend to see if they were home?

I found an old phone bill from 1957 in my grandma's stuff and it had like 12 calls on it for the whole month. Now I blow up my buddy Dave's phone with 25 texts before noon just asking what he wants for lunch - how did we ever coordinate anything back then?

Yeah we just had a system. You'd call the house line and if nobody picked up you'd try again later. Or you'd just show up at their place and hope for the best, worst case you'd leave a note in their mailbox. We planned things way more carefully back then because you couldn't just change plans on a whim. Honestly it made people more reliable, you said you'd be at the diner at 7 and you showed up at 7.

Three times I waited at the corner of Maple and 5th for my friend Lisa back in 1992. We had a plan to go to the mall together on a Saturday. She said she'd be there at noon. I showed up at 11:45 like a fool, sat on the curb with my little radio. She never showed, no way to reach her because her family didn't even have a phone. I waited until 1:30 before I finally walked home, found a note taped to my front door saying she got grounded last minute. So yeah, people were more reliable back then unless they had a strict dad like hers.
