Pro tip: My grandfather's 1957 ad for a $1.49 toaster was hiding a typo that changed the whole thing
My mom handed me a box of old papers from my grandpa's garage in Akron, Ohio, and buried in there was a magazine ad from 1957 for a Sunbeam toaster priced at $1.49. I laughed and told her no way that was real, since my dad paid around $30 for a toaster back in the 80s. Then I looked closer at the fine print and saw the actual price was $14.90, but the newspaper had messed up the decimal point when they set the type. I spent about 3 hours online comparing other 1957 ads and found at least 9 more with the same kind of slip. Now I'm not so sure how many of these old bargain prices I see at flea markets are real vs just printing mistakes. Has anyone else run into old ads with typos that totally throw off what you think something cost?
