My uncle's 1953 Buick ad says the car gets 18 miles per gallon, and folks online keep calling it a typo

I found the original Life magazine page in his attic in Toledo and the number is printed right there in black and white, but three guys in a Facebook group swore it had to be a misprint because their granddad's Roadmaster got 12. Has anyone else run into this where the old ad numbers don't match what people remember?
