My grandpa's 1953 Sears catalog had a page folded down at the toy section and I finally get why
I was going through a box of my grandpa's stuff after my mom moved out of the house in Peoria, and I found a 1953 Sears catalog with one page dog eared. It was the toy section, and he had circled a $4.98 Roy Rogers cap gun in pencil and wrote "want" next to it. My mom said he grew up poor, like no money for extras poor, and he must have kept that wish book for years. What got me was the little notes in the margins, things like "save up" and a date that said 11-14-53. It made me think about how a kid back then would stare at a page for weeks and do math on scraps to see if he could ever afford it. We have it easy now with one click and free shipping, but that circled cap gun felt more real than anything in my cart. Did anyone else's family keep old catalogs or wish books like this, and do you still have them?
