My grandmother's 1950s meat grinder vs the electric one I grew up with
Mom dug out Grandma's old hand crank grinder from the basement last week, the one with the cast iron base and the clamp. She wanted to make her meatloaf mixture the old way, so we gave it a shot. Took about 20 minutes to grind 3 pounds of chuck, but the texture was completely different. Fluffier, almost. Not that dense paste you get from the electric one in 40 seconds. I asked mom if she remembered the switch happening, and she said the electric one showed up around 1971, a wedding gift from my dad's side. She also said the old grinder sat in the pantry for years because nobody wanted to admit the hand crank made better meatloaf. Anyone else kept an old appliance around that just works different, even if it takes longer?
