Grandma's recipe card says 'bake until done' and honestly that beats any app I've tried
My grandma left us her recipe box when she passed in 2019 and I finally sat down with it last weekend at my kitchen table in Dayton. Half the cards just say stuff like 'bake until done' or 'butter the size of an egg' and I used to laugh at how useless that seemed. Now I time everything with a phone timer and a meat thermometer and I still mess up pie crust more than she ever did. She cooked on a gas range with no window and judged doneness by smell and the sound of the pan, which I can't even wrap my head around. My sister says those vague cards are lazy and we should just find modern versions online with exact temps. I think the vagueness is the whole point, it forces you to pay attention instead of staring at a screen. But then again I burned a batch of her sugar cookies at 350 for 11 minutes so maybe I'm wrong. Which side are you on, do old recipes with no real instructions have value or are they just frustrating?
