I was sorting through a box of her stuff in Wichita and found this little red Emerson from 1954, still plugged in and humming. Turning the dial I caught the tail end of a news report about fallout shelters, and it hit me how different everyday talk was back then, nobody whispered about it, they just built them. Eleven years of logged broadcasts, that's just unbelievable to me. I can barely remember what I listened to last week, let alone keep a daily record for over a decade. That little radio must have been like a third person in the house, always talking in the background. It makes me wonder what he thought was so important to write down, maybe he just wanted proof that the world kept turning. My own grandma had a big console stereo in the dining room, and the news was always on during supper, but nobody ever wrote anything down.
