Always thought those vintage oven thermometers were just decoration til my cakes kept sinking
My grandma left me her 1958 GE oven and I figured I knew better than to trust the built in temp dial. Bought a $8 mercury thermometer off ebay and stuck it inside. Turns out her oven runs 50 degrees hot on bake. I lost 4 batches of cookies and a birthday cake before I checked. Now I set it 50 lower and everything comes out perfect. Has anyone else tested their old appliances against the original specs?

My 1963 Chambers ran hot by almost 75 degrees when I finally tested it with a proper thermometer. Lost a whole batch of dinner rolls before I figured out the dial was lying to me. I marked the actual temps on the knob with a sharpie and now I just ignore the printed numbers completely. That cheap thermometer saved my baking life, I swear.
